Boys soccer teams on the rebound, looking to rebuild

Local soccer teams ended up at two different places last season. While the Seaside boys won the league title and went toe-to-toe with North Marion in a playoff monsoon, the Astoria boys soccer team struggled to find the back of the net.

Last season was a dream for the Seaside boys soccer team.
Behind second-year coach Nathan Daniels and 12 seniors, the Seagulls flew to take the Cowapa League title after defeating rival Tillamook in the last regular season game, 2-0. Then, the Seagulls played future state runner-up North Marion in a hard fought 2-0 defeat. This season, the Seagulls will turn to a whole new crop of players.
With all-state goalkeeper Luis Rodriguez and four other all-state seniors graduated, the Seagulls will lean on returning varsity contributors junior defender Christian Garcia and attacker Tobin Santos. Junior varsity captains David Daniels and Oscar Acuna are two of the many players looking to step up for the Seagulls this year. The player with perhaps the toughest job will be junior goalkeeper Desmond Dodge. Dodge will be replacing the best goal keeper in the state. Rodriguez was arguably the Seagulls best player in 2025 — he was good for at least one acrobatic save each game. His leadership and chemistry with the Seagulls backline is something that Dodge will have to work to develop during his next two varsity seasons.
It remains to be seen if the Seagulls will replicate their 10-4-1 2025, but Seaside still has more than a handful of players who contributed to last year’s squad.
Once again, Tillamook enters as the biggest league challenger to Seaside. The Seagulls enter 2026 ranked No.7 in the first Oregon School Activities Association coaches poll while the Cheesemakers came in 10th. Another team to watch will be Valley Catholic as they moved up to 4A this past offseason.
Astoria
The Fishermen enter 2026 looking to turn back the clock to 2024. After qualifying for the 4A State playoffs that year, the Fishermen went through a bit of transition in 2025.
Angelo Schauermann took over as head coach and goal scoring was an issue. The Fishermen netted just 7 total goals in their 14 games, which was the least number of goals of all 4A teams. This led to the boys finishing 2-9-3 overall and 1-7-2 in league.
Astoria lost eight players from last season including goal keeper and captain Maurice Mecham. This season, the Fishermen will be led by a strong senior class of 12 players. Senior Orrick Evans, junior Eduardo Alcantar and senior Dominic Rico will captain the 2026 Fishermen. They will be joined by fellow seniors Bryan Isidro, Tristan Schauermann, Angel Herrejon, Connor Johnston, Parker Nong, Axel Mejia Carrilo, Edwin Juarez-Rosas and Alejandro Gonzalez.
Much like their Clatsop County counterpart — Seaside — the Fishermen are searching for a new goalkeeper to replace Mecham. Mejia Carrilo and Juarez Rosas will battle for the goalkeeper spot throughout the early season.
Evans, Javier Lilly, brothers Bryan and William Isidro and Aidan Garcia are slated to make up the Fishermen’s attack this season. The objective for Astoria in 2026 is all about improvement. The Fishermen improving in both goal scoring and the win/loss column in a very tough 4A would show the program is trending upwards once more.
Warrenton
The Warriors soccer program is set to enter its third season in 2026. Corey Conant will be the head coach once more and his coaching staff will include Adam Crow and Jonathan Hoffman.
Though the Warriors are playing junior varsity, the school still hopes to one day see the program reach varsity status. It’s going to be a long process since the program is being built up from scrap and in order for the Warriors to reach varsity level they would need to either recruit players from other sports or continue developing young players in the area.
There are 12 games on the schedule for Warrenton this year including five home games. All home games will be played at the Warrenton soccer complex.
