Roncalli starts fast in victory over Guerin Catholic as Cromer shines

INDIANAPOLIS − Although Guerin Catholic gave its best effort, nobody could stop Roncalli senior quarterback Dominic Cromer. He ultimately put the game away in the third quarter.

Cromer accounted for three touchdowns as Class 4A No. 7 Roncalli defeated unranked Guerin Catholic, 35-17, Friday at Roncalli.
Cromer was 13-for-19 passing for 120 yards and one touchdown and ran for 100 yards and two TDs on 10 carries, hitting on all cylinders for the Royals.
“I made some mistakes, but overall I had a good game," Cromer said. "Obviously I can improve and improve in practice and get better next week.
Roncalli got off to a quick start, taking a 14-0 lead as the second quarter began. The second touchdown illustrated Roncalli's skill and talent.
Specifically, 6-foot-3-inch tight end Luke Roeder.
Early in the second quarter, Roeder capitalized on a scoring opportunity at the Guerin Catholic 15-yard line.
From a tight formation, Roeder cut to the right sideline with a receiver, leaving two defenders caught in miscommunication. Cromer had a clear view of Roeder.
After a quick pass, Roeder leaped over a defender and into the end zone to give Roncalli all the momentum.
"[I] saw holes," Roeder said. "Got to take what they give you. [I was] just doing my thing. [I] can't do it without the other 10 guys on the field."
Cromer gave the Royals a 21-3 lead, breaking through the middle after a fake handoff.
“Our linemen did a really good job today making it easy for me to run and making it easy for our running backs to run,” said Cromer, who was making just his second start.
Roncalli's victory was not without mistakes, with the teams combining to rack up 13 penalties and personal fouls in an occasionally messy game.
"I think as a team we took a step in the right direction, but obviously we’ll enjoy the victory now, especially for homecoming," Roncalli coach Sam Otley said. “I'm proud of the guys.”
Guerin Catholic quarterback Kellen Miller passed for 171 yards as Guerin scored twice in the fourth quarter.
“The game is full of ups and downs, especially when you play a well-coached team that plays hard,” Otley said. “There are going to be good times [when] things don't go our way. But we got to understand the next play … don't let the momentum or outside circumstances affect the way we know we are supposed to execute."
Roncalli moved to 3-2 and Guerin Catholic fell to 2-3.
