The Chicago White Sox have been without Mike Vasil in the bullpen this season after he underwent Tommy John surgery back in March after experiencing soreness in his right elbow. On Friday, Vasil had an opportunity to throw a pitch for the first time since the surgery.

The 26-year-old right-hander walked onto left field during a practice session with his teammates. He delivered a pitch with the whole team watching. Everybody gave him a round of applause during and after he threw the pitch in a hilariously touching moment.

Mike Vasil made his MLB debut in 2025, appearing in 47 games (three starts) for the White Sox. He served as a rather consistent long reliever, flashing potential with a 2.50 ERA and 1.248 WHIP with 82 strikeouts through 101.0 innings pitched. He also earned four saves during his rookie year.

Expectations were high for Vasil going into 2026. However, the injury completely derailed his season, forcing the White Sox to go another route in the bullpen. The former eighth-round pick is on pace to return to action around May or June in 2027.

While Vasil continues working his way back from injury, the White Sox can potentially end their five-year playoff drought. The club is currently tied for first place in the AL Central with the Cleveland Guardians.

Chicago will have a chance to separate itself from Cleveland on Friday. The White Sox are scheduled to take on the Detroit Tigers in the second contest of a four-game series. With just nine games remaining in the regular season, it’s do or don’t for the organization.
