Williams suffered a right hamstring injury in the Chicago Bears’ loss to the Minnesota Vikings, which forced him to leave the game early.
But this injury could be a blessing in disguise, as it is the second similarity that Williams’ 2026 season now shares with Patrick Mahomes’ 2019 campaign.

Coming into the 2026 season, Caleb Williams was hoping to improve on his breakout campaign with the Chicago Bears the previous year.
Williams was the metronomic figure of a sensational Chicago Bears offense that delivered the franchise their best season in years.
And in the playoffs, Williams earned the Bears their first playoff win in 15 years against the Green Bay Packers, their greatest rivals.
The Bears couldn’t get past the Los Angeles Rams, as their lack of playoff experience came back to haunt them.
Regardless, the season showed that the Bears, led by Williams, had a lot of promise. And NFL officials seemed to agree, as Williams was named the cover star of EA Sports Madden 27.
With this wave of momentum, some would have hoped that Williams wouldn’t suffer an injury so soon. But is he experiencing the same fate Patrick Mahomes did en route to the Super Bowl win?
In 2019, Patrick Mahomes was coming off an MVP-winning season and was named the cover star of EA Sports Madden 20.
However, many fans thought disaster struck when Mahomes suffered a dislocated right kneecap against the Denver Broncos in a Week 7 fixture.
Some fans were worried that he was going to be out for the rest of the season. However, Mahomes completed a miraculously quick recovery and returned after just two games.
That season, Mahomes would go on a sensational run in the playoffs as he led the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl win of the decade.
Could history be repeating itself with Caleb Williams? The similarities are quite clear, but Williams will have to return and deliver the type of performances Mahomes did en route to the Super Bowl.
