Memphis Redbirds fall to Red Wings in Game 1 of playoff series

A solo home run, an RBI double and a pair of sacrifice flies were all the offense the Rochester Red Wings needed to beat the Memphis Redbirds 4-3 in Game 1 of the best-of-three International League Championship Series on Sept. 22 at AutoZone Park.

Game 2 is set for 6:45 p.m. on Sept. 23 at AutoZone Park. If necessary, Game 3 would be at 6:45 p.m. on Sept. 24 in Memphis.

The Redbirds — the St. Louis Cardinals' AAA affiliate, making their first postseason appearance since 2018, when they won the AAA championship — got a pair of solo home runs from Seaver King and Jimmy Crooks in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. Crooks also had an RBI single in the ninth, cutting the lead to 4-3.

But the combined effort of seven Rochester pitchers held Memphis to just four other hits the rest of the game. The Redbirds, who also drew eight walks, left 10 runners on base in the game.

Switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje, the 12th-ranked prospect in the Cardinals' organization, gave up all four of the Red Wings' runs. He threw six innings, giving up eight hits and striking out six.
