Jalen Brunson says he's 'fully cleared' for Knicks training camp after offseason wrist surgery

Three days before the New York Knicks are scheduled to hold their annual media day session to open the 2026-27 season, Jalen Brunson broke some news of his own on Thursday. After undergoing surgery on his left wrist back in July, Brunson has been “fully cleared” to return to the floor in training camp as the Knicks begin to defend their NBA championship.

Brunson delivered the good news to a crowd of thousands who turned out to Randall’s Island Park for the Roommates Show Block Party, a live episode of the podcast he co-hosts with Knicks teammate Josh Hart.

“As you guys know, I had surgery this offseason," Brunson said. "And I just wanted to tell you guys that I am fully cleared."

Brunson had the procedure after "playing through discomfort" to his shooting arm throughout the Knicks' run to the title, according to SNY’s Ian Begley. During a radio interview this summer, he said he wasn’t sure exactly when he sustained the injury, but that he began noticing it late in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Despite the discomfort, the three-time All-Star and All-NBA selection didn't see his production dip from his customary elite level. Brunson averaged a playoff-high 28.4 points, 6.1 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 36.9 minutes per game in the 2026 NBA playoffs, shooting 46.5% from the field, 36.3% from 3-point range and 84.6% from the foul line en route to being named the Most Valuable Player of both the Eastern Conference finals and NBA Finals, delivering the Knicks’ first NBA championship in 53 years.

After the procedure, Brunson spent the bulk of the offseason with his shooting hand in a cast, perpetually visible as he made his way throughout a celebratory summer-long media tour that will culminate in him hosting the season premiere of “Saturday Night Live” tomorrow.

With summer now turning to fall, the Knicks will look to turn the page on last season, preparing for a new challenge in what promises to be a deeper and tougher Eastern Conference, with multiple questions to answer. How effectively can newcomer Andre Drummond replace the departed Mitchell Robinson as New York’s backup center? Which (if any) of the handful of veterans they’re bringing to training camp — Bruce Brown, John Konchar, Drew Eubanks, James Wiseman and Ochai Agbaji — will earn opening-night roster spots? Perhaps biggest of all: Can they come to an agreement with star big man Karl-Anthony Towns on a contract extension before entering the season?

While we wait for the answers to those and plenty of other questions, though, this much we now know: When the Knicks officially get going next week, their captain will be on the floor leading them.

“I was told that I am cleared,” Brunson said on stage on Thursday. “Just in time for training camp.”
