Steele football puts pedal to metal in big District 27-6A win over Pieper

Going into a road environment against Pieper at Warrior Stadium, the Steele Knights had one goal in mind - don't let up.
Steele followed through, getting off to a fast start and scoring on nine of its 11 possessions in rolling over Pieper 64-28 in a District 27-6A game Friday.

The Knights (3-1-1, 2-0), No. 3 in the Express-News power rankings, tallied 511 yards of offense with three Steele players scoring multiple touchdowns. Pieper (2-2, 1-1) didn't have an answer to slow down the Steele offense.
"I felt like it showed that no matter the opponent, we're going to go out there and keep our foot on the gas and just execute," Steele running back Marshall Kenner said. "That's what the coaches tell us to do every week – execute, execute, execute. No matter what we do, we execute."
Kenner rushed for 170 yards and scored two touchdowns, including a 71-yard scoring run. Kenner's backfield mate, Liam Jones, rushed for three scores on 87 yards rushing, while Jamin Harvell caught two touchdowns, both from quarterback DJ Green, who finished with 146 yards on 6-of-11 passing.
"They (Jones, Kenner and Harvell) just do a great job when they get the ball in their hands, so we just try to find different ways and be creative to get those guys in space because they're electric when they get it in their hands," Steele coach David Saenz said.
Steele's first two scores came after Pieper forced the Knights into third-and-long situations. On third-and-24, Green found Harvell in space on a screen pass, which Harvell turned into a 45-yard touchdown. On the Knights' next possession, Kenner ripped off his 71-yard scoring run on third-and-18 to give Steele a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
Saenz said execution was the reason why the Knights were able to come up with big plays on the key third downs.

(Robin Jerstad/For the Express-News)"They got us on some third down situations and just proud of the way the guys came out and executed in those situations," Saenz said.
A Steele turnover briefly gave Pieper some hope, as Campbell Dickson scooped up a Green fumble for a 15-yard score to get the Warriors within 14-7 early in the second quarter. That would be the closest Pieper would get as Steele got back to business, not letting off the gas as the Knights ended the first half scoring 21 consecutive points on their way to a 35-7 lead. Two of those scores were set up by fumble recoveries.
Pieper put up three scores in the second half, as Chase Lyons threw touchdown passes of 34 yards to Carson Lacombe and 5 yards to Cade Diamond. Backup quarterback Lance Reid connected with Cooper Kale for a 13-yard score on the final play of the game.
With the win, Steele has outscored its first two district opponents 120-47, which includes a 56-19 win over Wagner last week.
Both teams enter their open weeks next week. Steele's next game is at home against San Marcos on Oct. 8, while Pieper takes on Judson at Rutledge Stadium on Oct. 9.
