Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam denied bail in Delhi riots conspiracy case

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday denied bail to activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 riots conspiracy case, registered under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, Bar and Bench reported.
This is the third time the court has denied bail to Khalid and Imam. The trial in the case is yet to begin.
A division bench of Justices Prathiba M Singh and Dinesh Bhatt dismissed their appeals against a July 4 trial court order refusing bail.
The High Court said that it was “bound by judicial discipline” and could not modify conditions imposed by the Supreme Court in its January 5 order concerning the two men, Live Law reported.
In January, the Supreme Court denied bail to Khalid and Imam, but granted relief to activists Gulfisha Fatima, Meera Haider, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, Muhammad Saleem Khan and Shadab Ahmed.
It had said that Imam and Khalid could renew their bail pleas after the examination of protected witnesses was completed or after one year, whichever came earlier.
Khalid and Imam “stand on a qualitatively different footing as compared to other accused”, the Supreme Court had said at the time.
On Wednesday, the High Court said it could not find fault with the trial court’s decision in view of the Supreme Court’s conditions and dismissed the appeals, Live Law reported.
