Furman still slugging it out in England

At 38, Dean Furman’s best playing days are obviously behind him, but the ex-Bafana Bafana skipper is building a life off the pitch in England. The midfielder recently turned out for Warrington Rylands in an FA Cup qualifying tie. Furman represented Bafana 58 times between 2012 and 2019, including a stint as captain during AFCON 2015. Now, he works as a Player Services Executive for the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA). Some tongue-in-cheek fands online have pointed out that Furman might soon go head-to-head with Manchester City, who face a massive Premier League points deduction after being found guilty of all 115 charges relating to ‘sham payments’ and inflating revenues by as much as £900m.

Appollis is the present for South African football

Orlando Pirates attacker Oswin Appollis has become the nation’s go-to creative player. He claimed a hat-trick of assists against Eritrea in South Africa’s 5-0 win on Wednesday. The last player to claim three assists in a single game for South Africa? You guessed it, Appollis himself in 2024 against Congo.

Aubaas struck down by injury for Bafana

31-year-old Bathusi Aubaas has made three Betway Premiership appearances this term with one assist. The last time he made double figures for league appearances was his 14 outings in the 2024-25 campaign. However, across that and the following season, he failed to score or assist a single goal. Several fans online believe he’s lucky to be part of the latest Bafana setup. The midfield man started against Eritrea but came off with an injury in the 12th minute. South Africa have started life under new boss Pitso Mosimane with two AFCON qualifying wins. Next up is a friendly clash with Egypt on Sunday, 4 October at 20:00.
