Rush Hour: India logs driest monsoon in decade, jet fuel prices hiked by 13% and more

The southwest monsoon ended with a 12.6% deficit in rainfall, said the India Meteorological Department. This makes the season the driest in 11 years and the fourth driest this century.

The four-month rainy season began in the country on June 4, three days later than its usual onset date. It covered the entire country on July 9, a day later than the normal date.

The country had received 759.4 mm of rainfall against the long-period average of 868.6 mm, the weather agency said. The long-period average is the measure of the mean rainfall during the monsoon season over the last 50 years. Read on.


Jet fuel prices for domestic airlines has been hiked by about 13% or Rs 15.8 per litre. This is the third consecutive monthly increase in jet fuel prices. It will now cost to Rs 137 per litre.

The latest increase will add to the financial burden on airlines, as aviation turbine fuel accounts for about 40% of their operating expenses.

The prices of 19-kg commercial liquefied petroleum gas cylinders were also increased by around Rs 62.5 per cylinder. With the latest hike, a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder costs Rs 2,810 in Delhi and Rs 2,764 in Mumbai. Read on.
