Christian Gonzalez’s shoulder injury could force the Patriots to change more than one assignment against Buffalo.

New England’s top cornerback missed practice for the second consecutive day Thursday, leaving his availability uncertain ahead of Sunday’s divisional matchup. Christian Barmore also remained sidelined with a shoulder injury, putting two important pieces of the defense in question at the same time.
Neither player had been ruled out on Thursday’s report. Still, the Patriots are approaching a game against Josh Allen with meaningful uncertainty in both their coverage and defensive front. That combination makes Gonzalez’s status particularly consequential. His absence would affect who covers Buffalo’s receivers and how much help those defenders might need.
One Absence Could Change Several Jobs
Gonzalez appeared to hurt his shoulder during the first quarter of the Jacksonville game, although he returned and continued playing. Missing both practices to begin this week has kept the concern alive.

If Gonzalez cannot play, Carlton Davis would likely assume the leading outside cornerback assignment, with Marcus Jones and Charles Woods potentially taking on additional work, according to Boston.com. Cornerbacks coach Justin Hamilton emphasized preparation when discussing the depth behind the starters.
“Prepare like starters, and then they get their opportunity to go, make the most of it,” Hamilton said.
That preparation extends beyond knowing a replacement’s own assignment. A different combination of cornerbacks can change communication, matchups and the situations in which coaches choose to provide safety help.

Coverage And Pressure Are Connected
The potential complication grows with Barmore’s availability also unsettled. Coverage becomes harder to sustain when a quarterback has time to wait for a receiver to separate, while pressure becomes harder to generate when a defense needs extra players protecting the secondary.
Allen presents another decision: defenders must account for his ability to escape the pocket while maintaining their coverage responsibilities. Those are tactical concerns rather than a prediction that New England cannot compete without Gonzalez. They explain why his status matters beyond a single matchup.
Friday’s practice and the final injury designations will provide more information. Until then, the Patriots have to prepare for both possibilities, including a version of their defense that could require several players to handle larger roles.
