Eagles GM Howie Roseman explains Cam Jurgens deal, says team is still 'trying to win this year'

The Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive line is already in disarray and it’s not even Week 5. After losing Landon Dickerson ahead of Week 2, the Eagles also lost Lane Johnson to a surprising retirement Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the team voluntarily made another big change to its line, shipping away two-time Pro Bowler Cam Jurgens to the Baltimore Ravens for two draft picks. It was a puzzling decision considering the team is very much still in contention and is already dealing with offensive line issues.
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman addressed the trade Wednesday, explaining that the team wasn’t looking to deal Jurgens but felt compelled to act based on the future assets coming back in the deal, per The Athletic.
“We weren't looking to move Cam. Obviously, the Ravens have been looking for a center... Kind of told them wasn't anything we were looking to do. Over the last 24 hours, it got to the point where we felt like it could be a win-win for them. Obviously, getting a player who's been a two-time Pro Bowl center and obviously for us, being able to get the picks we're able to get, and use that money also to sign players. Had a chance to watch Drew here play center is doing a nice job. Have a young player there.”
Roseman said that between the draft picks — a fifth rounder in 2027 and a second rounder in 2028 — additional money and the elevation of Drew Kendall to the starting lineup, the Eagles felt like they were adding four players with the trade.
Roseman added that fans should not view the trade as the Eagles waving the white flag in 2026. He said the team was still trying to win this season, per The Athletic.
"We're trying to win this year. I think, from my perspective, just looking at what is the ultimate goal, which is to win the last game of the year, and then to have a run like we've had…
“You want to have an extended run, and so my job is to look at how we can have sustained success for a long period of time, and you don't get many opportunities to get second-round picks in trades and get flexibility. And just looking at our team, obviously a lot of guys on long-term deals and kind of being able to create some flexibility is a good situation for us, whether it's financially and also with picks."
It’s tough to argue with Roseman’s success in recent seasons. Since hiring Nick Sirianni in 2021, the Eagles have turned in five winning seasons. The team has made it to the Super Bowl twice over that period, winning a championship at the conclusion of the 2024 season.
While the team’s performance this year hasn’t been pretty — the Eagles barely managed to beat the Washington Commanders and Tennessee Titans — the team is still .500 and more than capable of going on a run and making the playoffs.
Doing so without Jurgens and Johnson — who Roseman spoke extremely highly about Wednesday — will be difficult, especially with the Jacksonville Jaguars on tap in Week 5.
