Kevin Zeitler takes starting right guard reps for Packers on Wednesday

Last Sunday, Travis Glover did an admirable job filling in as the Green Bay Packers’ right guard in the team’s win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The offensive line as a whole looked more cohesive than it had through the first three weeks of the season with Glover and veteran acquisition Laken Tomlinson as the starting guards, though the bar to clear was extraordinarily low.

Heading towards the Packers’ Week 5 matchup with the Chicago Bears, however, it appears that another veteran is preparing to start at right guard. On Wednesday, Kevin Zeitler lined up in that position with the Packers’ number one offensive line unit, a clear signal that the team expects him to be the starter on Sunday afternoon. This tracks with Matt LaFleur’s comments after his signing, when the head coach said “as soon as (Zeitler) feels good and ready to go, he’ll be in there” as the starter.
Zeitler starting against the Buccaneers would have been a particularly big ask of a player who is both fresh off the street and recently finished rehab on a quad injury. Not only did he only sign last Wednesday, limiting the time he had to pick up the Packers’ playbook, but the game was taking place in extremely warm weather and on the road. All of the cards were stacked against him playing last week, but those factors are now all gone.
With his insertion into the number one offensive line, Zeitler will have all week to prepare to start against Chicago. The weather is expected to be unseasonably warm in Green Bay this weekend — as of the time of this publication, the expected high according to the Weather Channel on Sunday is 80 degrees Fahrenheit — but the game is at home, limiting any travel complications.
If there were any additional question about who the team sees as its starting right guard, the depth chart on the team website should put that to rest. Zeitler is listed on the starting line, with Jacob Monk as the backup and Donovan Jennings on the third string.
Zeitler’s arrival may have already paid dividends in the classroom. A line that looked much more stable against the Buccaneers has already seemed to benefit from him passing along some veteran experience in meetings last week. Putting him on the field this Sunday should only further benefit the offense as a whole.
