It was indeed a great sight for Cleveland to have the former Oregon Ducks signal-caller back in action, even in practice. Watson remains the team’s QB1, but Gabriel’s return offers more optimism to the state of the team’s QB situation, at least in terms of health.
Watson is also just happy to see Gabriel practicing again.
“Dillon, he’s been around this whole time. He’s been in every meeting. He’s been traveling with us. He’s been on the practice field with us. He’s been communicating, giving suggestions within the offense and different reads,” Watson said of Gabriel, via Camryn Justice of News 5 Cleveland.
“So DG, man, he’s a great teammate, a better person. It’s good to have him back on the field and see that he’s healthy. All of us in that room, we’re one big group, got one goal and that’s ultimately to win and be successful.”
Will The Browns Keep All Quarterbacks Behind Deshaun Watson?
Dillon Gabriel, quarterback, throws the ball at the Browns mini camp in Berea on April 21, 2026.Cleveland has three active quarterbacks with Watson, Shedeur Sanders and sixth-round pick Taylen Green. It remains to be seen whether the Browns would keep all three once Gabriel gets activated from the injured reserve.
A third-round pick by Cleveland in the 2025 NFL Draft, Gabriel appeared in 10 games (including six starts) in his rookie season, passing for 937 yards and seven touchdowns against two interceptions.
The Browns are 3-1 through four weeks and will look to go 4-1 on Sunday, when they meet the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. They defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4.
