New York was eliminated in the ALDS for the second straight year.
The Yankees had their chances to extend the best-of-five series, but the Rays held on, highlighted by Victor Mesa Jr.’s go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning.

After the game, the biggest grievance of the fans of the Yankees was clear, as they trooped to X to air it out for all the world to see.
“Hear me out. Fire Aaron Boone. Hire CC Sabathia,” said @Digital_Vix3n.
“Can the Yankees PLEASE fire Aaron Boone,” echoed @stevenolguin212.
“Can we please move on from Aaron Boone after we get swept by the Rays? I don’t ask about (Brian) Cashman anymore because Hal (Steinbrenner) is scared to fire him. Not sure what Cashman has on the family, but it’s keeping him employed,” wrote @bigpedro3636.
“Fire Aaron Boone. Either from his job or into the sun. Both work,” posted @FannJames.
“Aaron Boone has been awful his entire tenure, but the mismanagement of that ALDS was by far his worst work,” commented @josh3302.
Boone, who has been with the Yankees since 2018, signed a two-year, $15 million contract extension in 2025. He has been in the hot seat since last season due to New York’s underwhelming finishes.
Before Game 3, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith predicted that Boone will be axed if they get booted out by the Rays.
The Yankees have advanced to the playoffs in eight of Boone’s nine seasons.
