Georgia Climbs To No. 1 After Tough Alabama Win

Georgia is the new number one team in the country. The Bulldogs earned 66 first-place votes in the latest AP Top 25 poll. This jump follows their 20-17 win against Alabama on Saturday.

Since the 2024 season, the Bulldogs have never before climbed to the top of the list. This win was a big deal because Georgia had to face a much harder test than their first three SEC games. Those earlier opponents had some of the worst offenses in the league. Now, the Bulldogs are 6-0 and 4-0 in the SEC.
A massive shift in the rankings
The new poll shows a lot of movement for top teams. While Georgia rose, other big names fell. According to CBS Sports, Texas dropped six spots to No. 7. This happened after the Longhorns lost to Oklahoma in the Red River Showdown. It is wild to think that Texas had a win over No. 4 Ohio State, but they still fell in the rankings.
Other SEC teams also had a rough week. The rankings show some major drops for the following schools:
- LSU fell 12 spots to No. 22 after a loss at Kentucky.
- Florida dropped out of the top 25 entirely after losing to South Carolina.
- Oregon also fell out of the rankings after a loss to UCLA.
It is not all bad news for the conference, though. Kentucky was the biggest climber in the group. Per NCAA.com Football FBS, the Wildcats went from unranked to No. 15. They did this by beating No. 10 LSU. This is the highest Kentucky has ranked since 2022.
Individual players making a name for themselves
Even though Alabama lost, some players played great. I always look at who stands out when the scoreboard doesn’t go their way. According to Yahoo Sports, three Alabama players are trending up after the game.
Trae’shawn Brown is a name you need to watch. The true freshman running back had 90 yards on just nine carries. He even had a 58-yard run during the game. His performance shows he can handle the pressure of a big SEC game. On the other side of the ball, Caleb Woodson was a force. He led the Alabama defense with nine total tackles. Five of those tackles were solo efforts, and he also had a pass defense and a tackle for loss.
Special teams also played a part in the Alabama effort. Alex Asparuhov was very good at his job. He punted five times for 193 yards. Every single one of those punts landed inside the 20-yard line. That kind of field position is vital in a three-point game.
Looking ahead to the next big battles
The top of the poll is set for some massive games very soon. The schedule is loaded with matchups that will decide the national title race. I am looking at the top five closely. Indiana is currently No. 5, while Ohio State sits at No. 4. This means their next game is a huge battle between two of the best teams in the nation.
The top ten is also packed with talent. We have Notre Dame at No. 2 and BYU at No. 8.
