Borussia Dortmund have rewarded Niko Kovač for his work in charge of the club by extending the head coach’s contract through June 30, 2029, per a release from the club. The eight-time German champions announced the agreement on Tuesday, securing the future of the 54-year-old Croatian as they look to build on the progress made under his leadership.

Kovač took over Dortmund in the spring of 2025, inheriting a team sitting in 11th place in the Bundesliga standings. He helped engineer an impressive turnaround, guiding BVB to Champions League qualification on the final matchday of the 2024–25 season before leading the club to a second-place finish last season.

Dortmund collected 73 points in that campaign, the fifth-highest total in the club’s history. Kovač has also accumulated 114 points across his 53 Bundesliga matches at the helm, averaging 2.15 points per game. According to the club, no other Dortmund head coach has recorded a higher points-per-game average.

The contract extension represents a vote of confidence in Kovač’s methods and the direction in which he is taking the team.

Lars Ricken, Borussia Dortmund’s Managing Director of Sports, explained why the club was eager to continue the partnership: “With Niko Kovac, we’ve been on a very good path since he took office a little over a year and a half ago. He has consistently developed the team and is highly regarded within our club. Extending Niko’s contract is also a clear sign of consistency and stability at Borussia Dortmund. And Niko knows what he has in Borussia Dortmund. That’s why we quickly agreed to continue on this path together.”

Chief Executive Officer Carsten Cramer also highlighted the strong relationships within Dortmund’s sporting leadership as an important factor in reaching the agreement: “Niko Kovac identifies strongly with BVB, and that’s not the only reason he’s such a good fit for our club. The unity between Niko, his coaching staff, and our sports management is incredibly refreshing. Accordingly, we were able to agree on continuing our collaboration quickly and amicably.”

The extension also ensures continuity throughout Kovač’s coaching staff. His brother and assistant coach, Robert Kovač, 52, and fellow assistant Filip Tapalović, 49, will both continue in their roles at the club through the extended partnership.

Sporting Director Ole Book, who has developed a close working relationship with Kovač, believes the coach’s experience and attention to detail will remain important as Dortmund pursue their ambitions: “A trusting relationship has developed between Niko and me since my first day here. Niko works with extreme meticulousness, and his experience gives him a calmness that benefits the team. We’re in touch almost daily and are working on taking the next steps with the team to ensure BVB’s success.”

For Kovač, the new deal provides an opportunity to continue developing a team that has already made significant progress under his guidance. However, the Dortmund boss made it clear that the club cannot afford to become complacent after its recent achievements.

“Together, we’ve set a clear course for development and laid important foundations for the future. We want to build on that. We have a clear vision of how we play soccer, how we perform as a team, and what it takes to achieve our goals. The key is that we don’t rest on our laurels, but work every day to get better. We see great potential and are convinced that, together, with full conviction and great determination, we can still achieve a great deal,” said Kovač.

Dortmund’s decision to extend Kovač’s contract reflects the progress made since his arrival, particularly the transformation from a struggling side into a team capable of challenging near the top of the Bundesliga.

With Kovač, Robert Kovač, and Tapalović all remaining in place, BVB will now look to turn that stability into sustained success and take the next steps toward competing for major honors in Germany and Europe.
