On Tuesday, things went from bad to worse.

It was announced that, according to U.S. Internal Revenue Service documents, Infantino received an undisclosed amount of money from an entity in charge of the World Cup, per Jeff Carlisle of ESPN.

Through an IRS Form 990, Infantino received $1.72 million from FWC2026 in 2024. FWC2026 was the non-profit FIFA set up to run the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. The compensation would violate FIFA statutes.

The money also came with his FIFA salary and benefits. According to FIFA, Infantino made around 4.274 million CHF, and roughly $4.86 million.

FIFA stated to ESPN through a text message:

“FIFA fully complies with all reporting requirements and strongly rejects any suggestion there has been a violation of FIFA’s Statutes.”

Then, FIFA issued a second statement to ESPN dismissing reports of an additional salary.

“FIFA does not pay a second salary to the FIFA President and complies with all reporting requirements in relation to compensation. The FIFA President’s annual compensation, as well as other contractual benefits, are decided by the independent Compensation Sub-Committee.”

“FIFA is fully focused on the FIFA Council meeting on Thursday and looks forward to discussions with its members to further grow the game following the most successful FIFA World Cup in history.”

On Thursday, the FIFA Council will meet in Zurich to discuss the matter.
