The New York Yankees appear inclined to trust George Lombard Jr. as their starting shortstop in the 2027 season. Despite the rookie’s inconsistent first taste of Major League Baseball, insider Joel Sherman believes the 21-year-old has shown enough promise to become a long-term solution for New York.
Lombard’s emergence has already reshaped the Yankees’ infield, particularly after he replaced Anthony Volpe as the starting shortstop in August.
Sherman acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding young players but expressed confidence in Lombard’s development.

“If Lombard were a stock, I would buy,” Sherman wrote, with his assessment highlighted by New York Post Sports.
The insider explained that Lombard has historically needed time to adjust whenever facing tougher competition. His minor league performances demonstrated that pattern before his promotion to the majors.
At Double-A in 2025, Lombard hit .215 with a .695 OPS across 108 games. However, he returned in 2026 and improved significantly, batting .312 with a .971 OPS in 20 games.
His Triple-A progression followed a similar trajectory. After struggling through his first 25 games, Lombard hit .339 over his next 33 appearances, demonstrating his ability to make adjustments.
Although his major league debut featured defensive mistakes and inconsistent plate discipline, Sherman sees the foundation of a dependable everyday shortstop.
The Yankees have already received encouraging signs from Lombard during his first postseason, further strengthening the case for his development.
With Volpe and Jose Caballero providing additional depth, New York has alternatives if Lombard encounters another adjustment period.
For Sherman, Lombard’s combination of athleticism, defensive potential, and offensive growth makes him a promising candidate to anchor the Yankees’ infield for years to come.
