Pat Freiermuth was added to the Pittsburgh Steelers injury report on Saturday after hurting his calf during the team’s final practice before facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
Per Steelers Now‘s Zachary Smith, Freiermuth will play despite being tabbed as questionable for the matchup.
Mike McCarthy’s group of pass-catchers had already taken its fair share of blows, with Michael Pittman Jr. (foot), Roman Wilson (finger/hand) and Ben Skowronek (calf) out. Pittman and Wilson have both landed on the injured reserve, while No. 1 wideout DK Metcalf dealt with an illness and missed practice on Friday.
Metcalf is good to go, however.
The Steelers could rely more on Freiermuth and gargantuan fellow tight end Darnell Washington with the receiver room reeling.
“I think that’s what’s nice about having the flexibility with the tight ends,” offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio said on Monday. “I think the way — with the versatility of Darnell and Pat, you saw it the other night, we’re in — maybe a play is out of 11 personnel, but we quickly can flip and get it out of 12 personnel.”
Freiermuth has 19 catches for 169 yards through five games. His four receiving touchdowns are tied for the most by a tight end in the league to this point.
