Earlier this week, Shakur Stevenson asked for his release from Zuffa Boxing and was soon granted it. Shortly after, Stevenson’s actions prompted Jake Paul to ask whether a similar request from Jon Jones would be honored as well.
While Jon Jones might be the greatest MMA fighter of all time, he lacked the leverage to secure one final fight with the UFC. Jones had pushed for a fight with Alex Pereira and for a fight at the White House; however, both his requests were denied. Now, seemingly retired by the UFC, Jones is in search of another fight. Jones currently works as Gable Steveson’s mentor the UFC.
Recently on social media, MVP co-founder Jake Paul asked if Jones could be released by the UFC, similar to how Stevenson was released by Zuffa Boxing, so he could fight for Paul’s MVP.

“Can Jon Jones request a release like Shakur Stevenson so we can go ahead and do this Francis Ngannou vs Jon Jones fight?” Jake Paul wrote. “They already said they are never working with Francis. So let Jon fly and we can give the fans what they want. Please and thank you.”
While Jones retweeted Paul’s request, Francis Ngannou added his own flair and touch to Paul’s words and reshared them by adding his own opinion. “Freedom isn’t free,” Ngannou wrote. “It’s not given, but it’s taken.”

As of now, neither Dana White nor the UFC has officially commented on Jones’ status or his UFC contract length. With no official update, it doesn’t seem likely that the UFC would let Jones go so easily.
