Social media can occasionally do some good.

Like in the case of a “severely ill fox,” according to Simcoe County Emergency Animal Response (SCEAR), that was spotted along Lakeshore Dr. recently near Minet’s Point in Barrie, Ont., with people both posting and calling about it. Ultimately, it got the organization’s attention.

“Forewarning, there’s a small fox running around Lakeshore drive, near minets point.” Amber Hanlon wrote on the Facebook page “Barrie Concerned Citizens” on Sept. 24 around 1:14 p.m.

“I called the city and a few others they told me to talk to, and nobody is saying they can deal with it. He looks injured too. Just be careful when driving.”

Feedback below the posting pointed out SCEAR was the best place to report such a sighting.

“The fox was reportedly limping and suffering from severe mange,” said SCEAR on Facebook . “Our volunteers attended on several occasions, hoping to safely contain it and get it the help it desperately needed. Despite its illness, the fox continued to show its natural instincts and would take flight whenever we attempted to approach and contain it.”

It took some patience, but animal was finally caught

Well, the fox was finally caught by SCEAR, who posted as much late Tuesday night on Facebook.

“Today, after receiving multiple reports of the fox once again being seen along Lakeshore Drive, our team responded quickly,” said SCEAR.

“With patience, determination, and the proper equipment, we were finally able to safely contain the fox. This little animal has been struggling for some time, and today, it finally got the chance to receive the help it needed.”

SCEAR said the fox will now be transferred into the care of a wildlife rehabilitation and veterinary service, “where it can receive proper medical attention, treatment, and a chance to recover.”

“We are incredibly thankful to everyone who took the time to report sightings and provide information,” said the organization.

“Those calls made a difference and helped us locate this fox.”
