The Detroit Lions and tight end Sam LaPorta were unable to agree to a contract extension over the offseason. It was a somewhat shocking development, as the tight end has been stellar through his first two seasons in the NFL, catching 146 passes for 1,615 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Unfortunately, a back injury limited LaPorta to just three touchdowns last season, although he’s bounced back in a big way, and through just five games, he has already matched that number this year, along with 27 catches for 316 yards.

It’s hard to blame LaPorta for being a little upset about his lack of an extension, given how good he’s been when healthy, something he spoke candidly about during an appearance on Pardon My Take.

“It’s disappointing that you go out there every week and you bear the risk of getting hurt. Like last year, whatever it was, Week 9, Week 10, I break my f—-ng back for this team. And then I’m going out there this year, and I’m ballin’, and maybe they’re just not showing the love,” LaPorta said.

“So I’m going to continue to do my thing and ball out, and in three months if I don’t get to wear the Honolulu Blue and play for the Lions anymore, it’s going to be all good. I’ll go get paid somewhere else. So, whatever.”

Detroit will have to pay up if it wants to retain one of the league’s premier tight ends. As things stand, the two highest-paid players in the league are  George Kittle and Trey McBride. LaPorta might not land in the same $19 million-a-year neighborhood as those two, but he’ll probably come close.

The Las Vegas Raiders inked their no. 2 tight end, Michael Mayer, to a three-year, $45 million contract, and it’s hard to imagine LaPorta not at least matching that.
