Coach Ryan Day said Julian Sayin will be out indefinitely on Tuesday night.
Day did not say when Sayin would return. He left it open that he could miss the rest of the season.
“We are putting together a plan for him not being available for the regular season and then also him not being available for the postseason,” Day said. “So based on that, if he’s not able to return this fall, we’re putting a plan together for that as well.”
The Buckeyes are on a bye week, which will give Arthur Smith, the offensive coordinator, and the rest of the coaching staff time to evaluate if Luke Fahey or Tavien St. Clair, former Bellefontaine High School quarterback, will be Sayin’s replacement.
Day said Fahey has the upper hand since the past couple of weeks the freshman played 10 snaps against Hoosier and went 0 for 2.
Fahey also played three games this season and has completed 9 of 13 passes for 203 yards with 2 touchdowns and two interceptions.
St. Clair played only two games for 5 of 7 completed passes for 52 yards, one touchdown and 1 interception.
“Luke has been ahead of Tavien, but now that there is a bye week these guys are going to get plenty of reps,” Day said. “We’re going to play the guy that gives us the best chance to win. Based on what we’ve seen in practice the last month, now we have to come up for air and come up with a plan. We’re going to need them to win a championship. It’s been done before, and it’s a challenge to them and the team to pick up the slack for losing Julian.”
Ohio State’s next game is on Oct. 31 at USC in Los Angeles, CA.
