A new report reveals that New York Knicks stars with contracts set to end soon aren’t the only members of the organization that owner James Dolan has been unwilling to reward after the franchise won its first championship in 53 years earlier this year.

Knicks players, staff, and fans celebrated the franchise’s legendary playoff run throughout the summer. However, the final night to commemorate the end of the team’s five-decade title drought came on Tuesday. Before New York’s season opener for the 2026-27 season, the organization raised its title banner and handed out gaudy 22-karat championship rings made by jeweler Jason of Beverly Hills.

The players showed off the massive rings full of bling while taking photos. Coaches and executives were also given big black boxes carrying their rings. Or at least that is the idea that Knicks decision-makers wanted to give viewers.

New York Knicks coaches were handed empty boxes on ring night?

According to a stunning report from The Athletic, the black boxes handed out to assistant coaches were empty. They have yet to be fitted for rings they will reportedly get “eventually,” and sources “described the assistants’ reactions to not getting rings ranging from genuine anger to annoyance.”

While it is not uncommon for assistants not to get rewarded on ring night, the billionaire owner of the team surely has enough money to get that done in the months since their championship win. Furthermore, it is not clear if head coach Mike Brown actually received his on Tuesday night. One has to wonder if they will get them at all.

NY Knicks employees sent fake title ring email

Yet, the coaches were not the only key members of the organization that got snubbed. “Many longtime employees at Madison Square Garden, including some who work in the Knicks’ business operations, will not receive rings at all,” the outlet reports. “Typically, most employees for NBA teams receive rings, even if they are not as fancy and expensive as the ones the players receive.”

Making matters worse is that The Athletic reports many staff members received an email in September showcasing the title rings that was captioned with “Congratulations, your Employee Championship Ring is here.” However, the email was actually “a phishing test MSG sent to see if those employees would click,” sources told the site.

Earlier this month, the Knicks made headlines over a divide in contract extension talks between Karl-Anthony Towns, Josh Hart and Miles McBride. The reason is Dolan’s disinterest in going over the second salary tax apron to keep his championship roster together. This week’s report shows that it isn’t just his stars that the owner is unwilling to reward after the organization had a very lucrative title run this spring.
