Where BYU Football Will be Ranked in Tomorrow's AP Top 25 Poll

· Yahoo Sports

A week after knocking off then-No. 2 Notre Dame, the BYU Cougars suffered its first loss of the 2026 season. This came days after moving into the highest spot in the AP Top 25 since its national title season of 1984. BYU became the latest unbeaten team to fall in a wild stretch of the college football season. What's even more wild is a school ranked in the top 2 has lost to an unranked foe in each of the past three weeks.

How far will BYU fall after the 39-31 double overtime thriller against UCF? Here's a breakdown of what's likely to happen on Sunday.

Where BYU will be ranked in Top 25 ahead of Week 8

Miami will stay at No. 1 after taking care of Pittsburgh with a 52-23 win. There's no doubt the Hurricanes will be on cruise control next week against Bill Belichick and UNC. The game to watch will be November 7. Miami travels to Notre Dame for a projected top-five matchup.

No. 3 Ohio State will likely move up one spot ahead of Week 9. The Buckeyes are benefiting from the bye week. But how will they do without Julian Sayin as the starting quarterback? Notre Dame, who was also idle this week, could land at No. 3 or No. 4. This depends on where Georgia and Indiana will go up the poll. With No. 7 Ole Miss and No. 8 Texas Tech falling, there's no reason to believe BYU is going to fall past No. 6 in the rankings.

If undefeated UCLA moves up, there's no case for them in the top five for beating then-No. 13 Oregon as their best victory. Being 7-0 in the Big Ten is a great feat. If they stay perfect going into the final month of the season, the Bruins should be in the top five. It's the same case for Utah. If they beat No. 14 Houston and roll ahead, having a signature win matters.

Needless to say, No. 6 or higher for BYU, unless some AP voters just look at records.

How BYU lost in double overtime

UCF was driving toward a potential game-winning field goal in regulation when Knights QB Keyone Jenkins lost the ball on a play that was ruled a sack on the field. But after review, the call was overturned to an incomplete pass. However, BYU was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, moving the Knights into kicker Will Stone's range.

BYU blocked Stone's 47-yard attempt. Stone recovered the loose ball, and since UCF tried the field goal on third down, the Knights would have had a chance at a second attempt. Stone's helmet was knocked off on the play. That forced a 10-second runoff, which sent the game to overtime.

Cougars QB Bear Bachmeier tried to lift his team one more time. But he came up short at the end. His final pass went in and out of the hands of Walker Lyons in the end zone. Bachmeier finished 16 of 32 for 257 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score. He also had an interception in the game, which was his third of the season. Kyler Kasper had six catches for 129 yards.

Before overtime, UCF drove to the BYU 1-yard line with less than two minutes left in regulation, but Jenkins was stopped on a quarterback sneak on fourth and goal.

UCF beat a ranked team for the first time since blowing out then-No. 15 Oklahoma State in 2023. They made history with the first win over a top-five team.

A Big 12 title and College Football Playoff spot remain within reach for BYU.
