Brooklyn Nets rookie Mikel Brown Jr. stepped up in a big way, nearly preventing an upset by the Boston Celtics. With only a few seconds left in regulation, Brown hit a fading corner 3-pointer to tie the game and send it to overtime. He then scored all of his 17 points in the fourth quarter and overtime period, but ultimately he made a grave mistake that cost Brooklyn the game.

The Nets were up 124-123 with 6.1 seconds left in overtime. Instead of holding the ball to get fouled and shoot free throws after the inbound to put them up three, he shot a layup that gave the ball back to the Celtics and allowed them to ultimately secure the victory.

Brown spoke about what occurred at the end of the game in post-game media availability.

“I did see the open lane. I thought I had a layup, but the ball was kind of already slipping out of my hands, and PG was already coming towards my right side. I felt like if I didn’t go up with it, I kind of was going to fall out of balance, so that was my last resort, in all honesty. I really can’t make an excuse. There are a lot of plays down the stretch that I messed up on that I take full accountability for. I’m going to be better.”

He then took to his Twitter to further showcase that he is taking accountability for the loss.

“THAT ONE IS ON ME BROOKLYN! IMMA SHAKE BACK I PROMISE YALL DAT💯”

The Nets are set to face off face off against the Detroit Pistons on Friday, October 30th.
