BC Football: How the Running Game is slowly forming into the team’s identity

What to Watch For

  • Can BC keep running the ball effectively? Mason McKenzie has been an impressive rusher all season, but the Eagles’ running backs hadn’t looked particularly impressive until last week against Georgia Tech. Duke’s run defense is much for formidable than the Yellow Jackets, so this will be a key test of the Eagles offense.
  • Stay strong on third down. Another reason for Boston College’s victory over GT last week was their strength on third down defense. The Yellow Jackets converted just 2/11 third down opportunities.
  • Contain Nate Sheppard. Duke’s star running back is huge threat in both the running and passing games. 40% of the Blue Devil offense runs through him, so if Ted Roof can scheme up a way to contain him out of the backfield, Boston College has a much better chance at victory.

Prediction: Duke 28 Boston College 24

BC has defied many expectations this season and I’ve loved to see it. But Manny Diaz’s Duke defense is one of the best units they’ve faced so far this season, and I don’t know if I completely trust the Eagles offense just yet. I hope they can continue their momentum from last week, but realistically the Blue Devils are probably just a bit better.
