On social media, fans did not shy away from calling out Brent Venables’ poor coaching. They expressed disappointment with Oklahoma’s on-field performance and urged the program to fire him.
“Brent Venables has let his team quit in their 8th game of the season. Truly one of the worst coaching jobs I’ve ever witnessed. No legitimate excuses can be made for this,” a fan commented
“Fire Brent Venables. I’ve never been more serious. I don’t care how much the buyout is. Bankrupt the city of Norman. Do whatever you gotta do. OU football is losing every bit of status under this guy. I’m over all of it,” another fan said.
“LaNorris Sellers is everything Brent Venables BELIEVES John Mateer is. Brent Venables, despite what JD Runnels would have you believe, doesn’t know anything about offense. It’s embarrassing,” one fan wrote.
Here are a few more reactions:
At halftime during Saturday’s game, the South Carolina Gamecocks led the Oklahoma Sooners 28-10. The second half did not improve for Venables and his team. Quarterback John Mateer scored two touchdowns. However, it wasn’t enough to fuel a comeback.
He finished the game completing 26-of-43 passes for 244 yards and two TDs. Meanwhile, South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers completed 19-of-24 passes for 301 yards, five total TDs and two INTs. This victory helped the Gamecocks improve to 5-3 after last week’s win against the Tennessee Volunteers.
Brent Venables shares his thoughts after humiliating home loss to South Carolina
In the postgame press conference, Brent Venables expressed his disappointment with the outcome of the game against the South Carolina Gamecocks. He said that they did not play well and paid the price for their underwhelming efforts.
“We got whooped tonight in every way,” Venables said via The Next Round’s X. “Really, I’m disappointed. I watched the game. Everybody else watched the game. They’re a more physical team. They created more explosive plays. We couldn’t get any offensive rhythm in the first half.
“We’re not built to overcome some of the ineptness as a football team that we displayed out there tonight. We let them throw the ball over our head. We didn’t tackle great. … They played with great purpose. They did what they needed to do on defense. … It’s not good football in any way.”
Last season, Venables and the Sooners finished 10-3 (6-2 SEC) and made the 12-team playoffs. However, Alabama eliminated them in the first round.
Oklahoma will next face the Florida Gators on Nov. 7.
