The matchup is highly anticipated because of the longstanding rivalry between the two programs. At the postgame press conference following the Rutgers game, Whittingham was asked about the upcoming matchup. Isaac Meyers posted a clip of the interaction on X.
“I know it’s clearly the second most important rivalry that we have,” Whittingham said. “We’ll dive into the personnel and everything tomorrow. I haven’t had a chance to watch much of them this year because of timing and all that stuff.”
While admitting he doesn’t know much about the Spartans’ performance this season, Kyle Whittingham also heaped praise on their coach. Fans on social media found his response concerning, given how high the stakes are.
“I can freely admit I was wrong supporting this hire. The most passionless head coach at Michigan ever. He sounds uninspiring and lost,” a fan wrote.
“Fire @UMFBCoachWhitt He doesn’t get it,” a fan wrote.
“God he looks tired. Please get him out of here,” a fan wrote.
“The continued lack of urgency and not truly understanding what these games mean is just troubling. The MSU game is not about his relationship with other coaches,” a fan wrote.
“Dude needs to go, it’s as simple as that,” a fan wrote.
“He has checked out! I don’t care what anyone says! Please get him and Beck out!!” a fan wrote.
This is Kyle Whittingham’s first season with the Michigan Wolverines, as he was brought in to stabilize the program after Sherrone Moore was fired last year. Fans aren’t happy with the results he’s produced so far or the ‘loser mentality’ he’s shown during press conferences.
Kyle Whittingham Provides an Update on Tommy Carr
Kyle Whittingham benched quarterback Bryce Underwood at halftime during the Penn State game and brought in Tommy Carr, who led the team to a 21-18 win. Carr was effective against Rutgers as well, completing 22 of 27 passes for 266 yards and a touchdown.
According to On3’s Clayton Sayfie, Whittingham revealed that Tommy Carr is battling the flu ahead of the Michigan State matchup.
“He’s had a good week for having the flu, being a little bit under the weather. He battled through it and was very sharp when he was on the field. He’s a guy that seemingly gets better every day,” he said.
It’ll be Carr’s third career start for the Wolverines after he lost his first against Indiana.
