He now hopes to be that anchor on the offensive line for the Cleveland Browns beginning in 2026.

Howard, who was traded to Cleveland on Monday in exchange for a fifth-round pick, penned his goodbye on Instagram to the Texans and the city of Houston before departing for the AFC North franchise.

“I want to thank the city of Houston for embracing me and welcoming me for the last 7 years,” Howard wrote. “NRG Stadium felt like home from day one, and the love and support from this city meant everything to me.”

A first-round pick out of Alabama State in 2019, Howard was the second-longest tenured player for the franchise before his departure. Only kick Ka’imi Fairbairn preceded him as the last player remaining from the previous regime under Rick Smith, Brian Gaine and former head coach Bill O'Brien.

Howard, who had one year remaining on his current contract, expressed his gratitude toward the McNair family and their support for believing in a former quarterback-turned-left tackle from a small school to live out a big dream.

“A huge thank you to the McNair family for believing in me, drafting me, and giving me the opportunity to grow into the player and person that I am today,” Howard wrote.

The Texans' offensive line benefited most from Howard's role in the lineup. Over his seven seasons, Howard rotated from four different positions, including starting at both left guard and right tackle during his final season. A natural tackle, the longtime lineman served as the anchor of an ever-changing five-man front, including playing three different positions between 2023-25.

“To all my teammates along the way—through the ups and downs, battles in the trenches, and everything in between—thank you for pushing me and making those Sundays special,” Howard wrote. “The relationships we built won’t fade.”

In Cleveland, Howard is expected to be the anchor of a rebuilt offensive line, which will have five new starters in 2026. He recently signed a three-year, $63 million extension to remain in Cleveland through 2029.

Over his seven seasons, Howard started 93 games for the Texans, including 36 in the past two years. He was a key figure in the development of quarterback C.J. Stroud, who now will have four new starters protection him in 2026.

“Houston, you’ll always have a piece of my heart,” Howard said. “Thank you for the memories. Excited for the next chapter in Cleveland!”

The Texans will play Howard and the Browns in 2026 at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
