Iowa State announced the hire in a May 26 news release. Wilcke had served as an assistant coach for William Penn's men's and women's teams for three seasons. Wilcke also coached for one year at Iowa Wesleyan as an assistant for the women's program prior to his time at William Penn. Iowa Wesleyan finished seventh at the 2023 NAIA Championships.

Wilcke worked as an assistant under former William Penn women's head coach Jake Kadel, who has also accepted an assistant coaching position at Iowa State. With the Statesman, they coached nine national champions and 18 All-Americans in three seasons. The program took 33rd at NAIAs prior to their arrival, but they took the Statesmen to three top-four finishes at the NAIA Championships, including ending as a runner-up in the 2026 NAIA Championships with four NAIA champions and seven All-Americans.

Wilcke, like Kadel, is also a former Iowa Hawkeye wrestler. Kadel was a three-time NCAA qualifier in his college career that spanned from 2015-20.

According to the news release, Wilcke will serve as an assistant coach while also managing day-to-day operations and travel logistics.

"Cash is someone who brings expertise in multiple areas to our staff,” Iowa State head coach Alli St. John said in the release. "He has experience handling day-to-day operations for a college team and has a great wrestling mind to help our athletes develop. Cash has a relentless work ethic and I’m excited to welcome him to Ames!"

Iowa State women's wrestling will make one more hire to the staff, St. John said, but not until January 2027. In the meantime, the trio of St. John, Kadel and Wilcke will continue to assemble a roster that already includes former Statesmen Piper Fowler and Christianah Ogunsanya.
