Defense.
Indiana improved to 4-2 on the season after defeating the Golden State Valkyries on Friday, and the performance once again highlighted a trend that is becoming impossible to ignore. In every Fever victory this season, Indiana has held opponents to 82 points or fewer. In both losses, however, the Fever allowed more than 100 points.
That contrast has helped define the first few weeks of Indiana’s season. The Fever clearly have enough offensive firepower to compete with anyone when healthy, especially with Caitlin Clark leading the attack. But Cunningham made it clear that Indiana’s long-term potential will depend on whether the team fully commits defensively every night.
Sophie Cunningham said the quiet part out loud
Speaking on the “Show Me Something” podcast, Cunningham explained that Indiana already has the talent to become a dominant defensive team, but only if everyone fully buys in.
“When it comes to our defense, I think that is an area that we have great potential in, but we have to want to be a great defensive team,” Cunningham said.
The veteran guard pointed to accountability as the biggest factor, noting that one player failing to execute can completely disrupt the Fever’s defensive schemes.
“If four people are doing it and that one person isn’t, it’s going to mess up our schemes every single time,” Cunningham added.
It was an honest assessment from a player who understands what winning teams actually look like over the course of a long season. Cunningham also acknowledged the reality of defending at the professional level, especially in a league filled with elite guards and fast-paced offenses.
“Defense is hard,” Cunningham said. “No one wants to guard people who are so freaking fast.”
Still, she believes the Fever can become “an unstoppable defensive team” when the effort level consistently matches the talent on the roster.

Indiana’s wins are starting to reveal a clear pattern
The Fever’s best performances this season have almost all followed the same formula. Indiana defended aggressively against Golden State while limiting transition opportunities and forcing tougher half-court possessions. The Fever also looked sharp defensively during their convincing 90-73 victory over the Portland Fire earlier this year.
Those games looked far different from Indiana’s defensive struggles in losses against the Dallas Wings and Washington Mystics, when opponents repeatedly found clean looks and pushed past the 100-point mark. That inconsistency remains the biggest question surrounding the Fever.
Indiana already looks much deeper, tougher and more experienced than it did a season ago. Cunningham’s arrival brought additional toughness and leadership, while Clark continues drawing massive defensive attention every night. But championship-level teams rarely rely on offense alone.
The Fever’s ceiling may depend on their toughest commitment yet
What makes Cunningham’s comments notable is how directly they reflect the expectations surrounding Indiana this season. The Fever are no longer viewed as a rebuilding team simply trying to stay competitive. With Clark healthy and veteran additions around her, Indiana entered the season expecting to compete near the top of the WNBA standings.
That makes defensive consistency even more important. The encouraging part for Indiana is that the flashes are already there. When the Fever communicate well, rotate properly and play with physicality, they look capable of overwhelming teams on both ends of the floor.
Now the challenge becomes sustaining that intensity every night. Cunningham’s message made one thing clear: the Fever already know exactly what is holding them back from becoming a true championship contender.
