  • Players must deposit smart eyewear with Security Liaison Officers alongside phones and smartwatches.

Smart glasses are now banned in IPL restricted areas: Here is why

According to The Indian Expressthe IPL's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) has issued a fresh directive banning the use of smart eyewear inside restricted match-day areas as the league moves to stay ahead of a new generation of communication technology that could be misused during games.

The devices are capable of live-streaming footage, sending and receiving text messages, and making audio and video calls using mobile data or Wi-Fi. During a match, where unauthorised communication between players and outside parties is a serious integrity concern, there remains a potential for misuse.

What is the new rule regarding smart glasses in IPL?

The ACSU has now instructed players and support staff to hand over any smart glasses to the designated Security Liaison Officer upon arriving at the venue.

These devices will be kept in lockers alongside mobile phones, smartwatches, and any other gadget with communication or recording capability, before entering the Player and Match Officials Area.

What happens if a player breaches the smart glasses rule?

If anyone is found with smart glasses inside the PMOA, they will be guilty of violating the rules.

After a fair trial, if the charges are proven, then disciplinary action and financial penalties will be imposed under IPL 2026 Minimum Standards regulations.

The 2013 spot-fixing scandal has forced the ACSU to introduce sweeping changes in how players are monitored and how security is enforced around matches.

They now monitor team hotels, dressing rooms, practice facilities, and dugouts with more vigilance and attention.

Even in 2026, Rajasthan Royals team manager Romi Bhinder was fined Rs 1 lakh and given a formal warning after being filmed using a mobile phone in the dugout during a match.

Later, RR captain Riyan Parag was caught on broadcast cameras using an e-cigarette inside the dressing room during a game against Punjab Kings.

That incident resulted in a fine of 25 per cent of his match fee and a demerit point for conduct considered damaging to the game's reputation.
