NEW YORK - Through his first two starts of the year, Gerrit Cole has set an awfully high standard for starters coming off Tommy John surgery.

"It’s motivating to me just to see what he’s done behind the scenes, how detailed he’s been,'' said Yankees teammate Clarke Schmidt, coming back from his second Tommy John surgery.

Cole hasn't allowed an earned run in 12.2 innings as he enters Wednesday night's start at Yankee Stadium against the Cleveland Guardians.

Schmidt expects to begin pitching to live hitters by the end of this month, with the hopes of returning to the Yanks at some point in the second half.

Through this rehab process, Schmidt says he's developed an even closer relationship with Cole, talking through the rehab process and experiencing the ups and downs over the year-plus recovery.

Ultimately, "it's your career, you've got to take it in your hands,'' said Schmidt. "But to be able to have (Cole around) and to have him help me out, it's been great.''
