Deandre Ayton’s inevitable Los Angeles Lakers low post replacement may not be a polished veteran with years of NBA experience.
Instead, it could be a young, inexperienced contributor with an astronomically high ceiling. Specifically, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Miami Heat’s 22-year-old All-Rookie center could soon become a Laker in a three-team trade offseason trade scenario involving the Milwaukee Bucks
“Big man who can stretch the floor, high energy, block shots,” Windhorst said on his ‘Hoop Collective’ podcast Wednesday.
“There would be quite a few teams interested in Kel’el Ware if he got shipped to Milwaukee and they were willing to flip him. If I were the Lakers and Kel’el got shipped to Milwaukee, I’d be on the phone.”
Ware, who was named to the All-Rookie second team last season, is on an upward trajectory with the Heat, which isn’t shocking considering Erik Spoelstra’s impressive track record as a developmental coach.
The Indiana product’s graceful athleticism, high-level instincts as an interior defender, ascending perimeter shooting, and consistent activity resulted in an encouraging sophomore season in Miami. Ware averaged 11.1 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game this year, shooting 53.0% from the field and 39.5% three-point land.
If Windhorst’s trade idea the Heat would send Ware to Milwaukee for Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Bucks would then re-route Ware to the Lakers, giving Los Angeles its center for the immediate and long-term future.
It’s certainly an interesting trade concept, and if all the pieces align perfectly, it come be a reality this summer.
