The Los Angeles Lakers have a big offseason ahead, especially with the goal of retaining Austin Reaves. For the first time in a while, the Lakers also have an opportunity to pursue several notable names in free agency and the trade market.
All of the moves Los Angeles makes this summer will revolve around Luka Dončić. The Lakers also have significant financial flexibility to make upgrades.
“The Lakers have a megastar in Dončić and a unique amount of potential cap space for a title hopeful this offseason. This summer will go a long way toward determining how well they can build a championship contender around Luka over the next few years,” Silver Screen and Roll’s Bryan Toporek wrote.
If Los Angeles plans to retain Reaves, it will need to make additional moves to create flexibility for other deals. The Lakers are expected to explore the market for Dalton Knecht and Jarred Vanderbilt.
“The Lakers are actively trying to find trade partners for Dalton Knecht and Jarred Vanderbilt’s contracts to create even more cap space. With Austin Reaves’ new contract likely set to be above $40 million annually, Los Angeles will need more flexibility to make other moves,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery posted.
Vanderbilt and Knecht are tied to a combined $66 million in contract value. Both players could benefit from fresh starts after limited roles last season. Knecht recently hosted a camp at Tennessee but avoided questions about his NBA future or role with the Lakers.
“Knecht made one thing clear going into the camp, the day belonged to those attending. He would not be taking any questions about his NBA career or his role with the Los Angeles Lakers,” Knox News’ Xavier Burton wrote.
At this point, Knecht appears to be the more likely candidate to be moved, though Vanderbilt is also a name the Lakers are open to dealing. Los Angeles understands how critical this offseason is for the franchise’s long-term direction.
Ultimately, the focus remains on retaining Reaves and building a stronger roster around Dončić. Vanderbilt and Knecht will likely seek opportunities where they can play more consistent rotational roles, which could be available elsewhere.
