Contreras came into the season with 172 career home runs and had hit at least 20 home runs in four of the last five seasons. This season, he already has 16 home runs through 67 games. He has been one of the best players on the team, and hit three home runs in the series against the Texas Rangers.
He is in the middle of a great stretch at the plate, but is not thinking about it too much. Instead, he is focusing on making good contact and keeping a simple approach every time he steps up to the plate.
“The approach of making contact, right to make contact, is working,” Contreras said, per MassLive's Avery Hill on Tuesday. “I know I’m in a good stretch right now, but I’m trying not to like overthink or think too much. Trying to keep my game simple: Make contact and let things happen.”
“I’m not seeking for homer, I’m not seeking for double, but I’m just trying to make every contact on the plate,” Contreras added.
The Red Sox are trying to get back on track. They are not out of the postseason race, but if they do not start playing better, they soon will be. Contreras has done his part, and then some, to keep the team alive. However, they entered Tuesday 5 1/2 games out of a wild card spot, and need to start stacking some series wins.
