ESPN reports Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is applying to the NFL's Supplemental Draft

Sorsby had been fighting for NCAA eligibility amid a sports betting scandal which saw the quarterback admit to having a gambling problem after placing more than 9,000 bets totaling at least $90,000 while at Indiana, Cincinnati and Texas Tech.

Among those wagers were 40 bets he reportedly placed on Indiana while being on the Hoosiers' football team.

Sorsby, who received treatment for a gambling addiction, is an intriguing option for several NFL teams, including the Steelers. That's because quarterback Aaron Rodgers has made it clear the 2026 season is his final ride in the league.

ESPN NFL analyst Ben Solak said eight teams -- that's 25% of the entire league -- should have Sorsby on their radar: the Steelers, Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns.

So how does the Supplemental Draft work? It's a complicated lottery system in which teams get weighted and make bids on players based on their draft-round projection.

"One AFC executive predicted Sorsby would have been a late-first-rounder if he were available in April's traditional draft -- but the last supplemental draft to garner a first-rounder was 1992 (quarterback Dave Brown)," ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports.

"An excellent easy thrower with the ability to make every throw," an NFC executive told Fowler. "Big, good athlete, can go off schedule, can rush for touchdowns in short-yardage or goal-line situations. Lots of highlights. Would like more consistency, but a first-round talent for sure."

Look, is Sorsby a sure thing? Absolutely not. He could be the next Patrick Mahomes. Or he could be the next Johnny Manziel. But if the draft price is right, it might make sense for the Steelers to take a swing.

A quick look at Pittsburgh's depth chart shows Mason Rudolph, Will Howard and Drew Allar backing up Rodgers this year. And none of them look like Rodgers' heir apparent.

At some point, the Steelers will need someone other than Rodgers calling plays in the huddle. Sorsby could be that someone, if general manager Omar Khan and head coach Mike McCarthy play their Supplemental Draft cards right.
