Celtics star Jayson Tatum shares Jaylen Brown farewell post: Continue to be special

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown shared the parquet floor for nine years as part of the Boston Celtics. In that time, they made playoff run after playoff run, reached two NBA Finals, and even won it all in 2024. Their on-court partnership has been fruitful, but it's officially come to an end.

On Wednesday afternoon, Boston dealt Brown — previously the longest-tenured Celtic — to the rival Philadelphia 76ers as part of a blockbuster trade that stunned the Celtics community. The longest-tenured Celtic is now Tatum, who has never experienced a season without Brown before. Tatum paid tribute to their successful time together on Instagram with a farewell post:

"9 years!" he wrote. "Forever grateful for all that we accomplished together, for pushing me to be a better player. From first-round exits to winning a chip together, I'm thankful for it all."

Although many outsiders tried to cut those nine years short, Tatum and Brown persevered. There were trade rumors, debates about if Brown deserved Finals MVP in 2024, and various pundits that claimed one Celtics star was superior to the other.

Despite all of those distractions, which felt incessant, Tatum and Brown reached the mountaintop together and could very well have their numbers hoisted into the rafters of TD Garden one day. Almost everybody has an opinion on their relationship, but nobody can question what they accomplished while donning the green and white.

"Nothing but love and respect for you as a player and as a person!" Tatum continued. "Looking forward to see how you attack this next chapter of your career and wish nothing but the best for you! Continue to be special!”

Brown's 76ers and Tatum's Celtics each belong to the Atlantic Division, so they'll face one another at least four times next season. The NBA world will likely be monitoring their every move and interaction during those games, yet Tatum and Brown understand better than anyone else that what really matters is what happens on the court.

"I share this with my brothers and my partner in crime, Jayson Tatum," Brown said two years ago while showered in confetti accepting Finals MVP.
