Tour de France Stage 5 winner: Olav Kooij rules sprint finish in Pau

· Yahoo Sports

Stage 5 of the 2026 Tour de France concluded with an exciting sprint finish as riders raced from Lannemezan to Pau over 98.36 miles of predominantly flat terrain. Ultimately, Dutch sprinter Olav Koolj beat the heat and surged across the finish line in Pau to claim victory for the day.

Although Stage 5 was the first genuine flat stage in this year’s Tour, it still presented the riders with 1,600 meters of elevation gain, no small feat in the sweltering heat. The route’s main challenge, the Côte de Baleix (a category 3 climb), proved manageable for the sprinters compared to the mountain stages yet to come.

After cresting the Côte de Baleix, riders plunged into a fast descent covering the last 20 kilometers, which set up a thrilling showdown in Pau. Frenchman Baptiste Velstroffer seemed to be in charge of the stage with a solo breakaway, leading the race for much of the day.

However, as the race headed into the final miles, the stage shifted to a tactical battle among the top sprinters, with Olav Koolj launching a perfectly timed sprint, seizing his first Tour de France stage victory.
