Penei Sewell climbs to No. 1 among NFL offensive tackles
After finishing second in last year’s rankings, Sewell climbed into the top spot in ESPN’s annual survey of more than 70 NFL executives, coaches, and scouts. Rather than dominating first-place votes, Sewell won through remarkable consistency, appearing near the top of ballots across the league.
One veteran defensive coach praised every aspect of Sewell’s game.
“He’s still the most complete player at this stage. Physical, powerful, smart.”
An NFC executive offered an even more colorful evaluation.
“He has the most ‘f— you’ attitude plays in the league. Always brings the juice.”
That aggressive mentality has become one of Sewell’s defining traits. Whether he’s driving defenders into the turf in the run game or finishing blocks long after the whistle, Sewell consistently plays with an edge that has helped establish Detroit’s physical identity under Dan Campbell.

Perhaps the most encouraging part for Detroit is Sewell’s age.
At just 25 years old, he has already earned multiple All Pro honors, signed a long term extension, and now sits atop the NFL’s premier offensive tackle rankings. Most offensive linemen don’t reach their peak until their late twenties, suggesting Sewell may still have another level to reach.
If he successfully handles the transition to left tackle while maintaining his dominant run blocking and improving his pass protection, there is every reason to believe he can remain at the top of these rankings for years to come.
