Updated contract details for UNC basketball GM Jim Tanner

· Yahoo Sports

The 2025-26 UNC men's basketball season started with plenty of promise, thanks to a combination of breakout stars and non-conference dominance, but ended with Caleb Wilson's season-ending injury and Hubert Davis being fired.

North Carolina hired longtime NBA boss Michael Malone as its next head coach, looking outside the Carolina Family for the first time since landing Frank McGuire in 1952. Malone retained a few members from Davis' staff, including former players Sean May and Pat Sullivan, while Jim Tanner stays general manager.

The Tar Heels also recently released salaries for Tanner and their new staff. Tanner is making $1.05 million for the 2026-27 season, his second in Chapel Hill, which is drawing a few question marks.

Tanner deserves his new salary, which is more than any of Malone's five assistants will make. UNC trotted out a new-look roster during its 2025-26 campaign, with Tanner helping land now-NBA players Wilson and Henri Veesaar in the transfer portal.

On North Carolina's 2026-27 roster, you'll notice highly-touted transfer portal additions like Matt Able and Neoklis Avdalas, plus international additions such as Sayon Keita and Alexandros Samodurov. One of Tanner's main responsibilities is helping negotiate NIL contracts with players and, with the Tar Heels looking for a return to college basketball glory, NIL money needs to be doled out responsibly.

Tanner represented several former UNC stars in their pro careers, including Joel Berry and Vince Carter. Last season, Tanner already showed he's a valuable addition to the program.

Will this new contract increase pay off for Tanner? North Carolina's new-look roster looks great on paper, but will players gel quickly into non-conference play?
