Every rookie enters the NFL with questions to answer. For Baltimore Ravens punter Ryan Eckley, one of the biggest centered on whether his powerful leg could consistently produce the hang time necessary to succeed at football's highest level.

Distance has never been the concern. Giving coverage units enough time to get downfield has been the larger discussion. Recent workouts suggest that concern may already be fading.

Thanks to a Nic Mason clip shared on X, we were all given some behind-the-scenes access. Eckley has been training with a former NFL kicker turned kicking consultant, Nick Novak. The latter isn't simply another offseason instructor. He spent 10 seasons in the NFL and earned a spot on the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers' All-Decade Team for the 2010s, giving his evaluations added credibility.

Ryan Eckley is taking his development very seriously

Take a moment and view Eckley's reel if you will. The results from his workout offered plenty of encouragement. He launched punts of approximately 55 and 60 yards while recording hang times of 4.93 and 4.83 seconds, the type of combination every special teams coordinator wants to see.

Those numbers only add to what was already an outstanding collegiate resume. Baltimore selected Eckley in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft with the 211th overall selection after a decorated career in the Big Ten. He was named the conference's Punter of the Year in 2025. He earned first-team All-Big Ten honors that same season and was recognized as a second-team All-Big Ten performer in both 2023 and 2024.

Ravens training camp will provide the real test

Eckley's consistency made him one of the nation's most accomplished specialists entering the draft. Now, the slate is wiped clean, and he'll begin again. Of course, practice videos aren't the same as NFL games. The true evaluation begins once Eckley starts punting with live coverage units, NFL-caliber returners, and the pressure that comes with competing for a roster spot. Still, the early signs are difficult to ignore.

The Ravens have built one of the league's strongest reputations for identifying and developing specialists. Eckley now appears determined to continue that tradition. If the hang time displayed during these recent workouts carries over into training camp and the preseason, one of the biggest questions surrounding Baltimore's newest punter may not remain a question for very long.
