INWOOD, IA (KELO) — West Lyon baseball is heading to the state tournament for the second straight season.
The Wildcats’ 23-1 season has been led by four seniors and five juniors, most of whom have been playing together since they could pick up a baseball.

“When you have a bunch of seniors that the underclassmen treat with respect, the kids just grow,” head coach Koury Kramer said. “That’s what this senior group has done and that’s what past senior groups have been doing as well.”
“We all just come to practice every day wanting to get better and we push each other really hard in practice,” senior Sam Underberg said. “We’ve all played together since we were really young and we all just really enjoy being around each other.”
West Lyon’s lone loss, a 10-3 defeat to Coon Rapids-Bayard on June 27, gave the team the perspective it needed to make a run to the state tournament.
“These guys hate losing, they’re competitors,” Kramer said. “They came back with a workmanlike attitude. They were locked in and they flushed it and they were able to get on another winning streak.”
“We need to stay grounded,” Underberg said. “Nothing’s going to be given to us anymore. Tomorrow’s not guaranteed so we just got to stay grounded and play ball.”
When it comes to facing Unity Christian in the state quarterfinals, Kramer’s message to his group is simple.
“Enjoy the moment,” Kramer said. “Have fun. Do what we’ve been doing all year. That’s the thing that we say, do what we do. And that’s what I want those guys to do.”
They will look to keep doing what they do, alongside one another in West Lyon uniforms.
“It’s not about the name on the back of your jersey, it’s about the name on the front,” Underberg said. “We’re really representing a special program here and I think about that every day I get to come here.”
First pitch between the Wildcats and the Knights is set for 11 a.m. in Carroll.
