The Texas Rangers are not waiting until the final hours before the 2026 MLB trade deadline to strengthen their roster. Texas agreed to acquire catcher Logan O’Hoppe and right-handed reliever Chase Silseth from the Los Angeles Angels, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The return heading to Los Angeles was not immediately reported.

“Trade news: The Texas Rangers are acquiring right-handed reliever Chase Silseth and catcher Logan O’Hoppe from the Los Angeles Angels, sources tell ESPN,” Passan wrote on X.

The deal is especially fascinating because it sends two controllable players between American League West rivals. The Rangers are trying to secure another division title, while the Angels appear ready to make significant changes during another disappointing season.

Texas entered Wednesday at 55-52 and held a two-game lead over the Houston Astros in the AL West. Los Angeles, meanwhile, sat at 42-66 and remained buried at the bottom of the division.

Rangers make intriguing bet on Logan O’Hoppe

O’Hoppe is the biggest name in the deal.

The 26-year-old was once viewed as a major piece of the Angels’ long-term core after being acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies for outfielder Brandon Marsh at the 2022 trade deadline. O’Hoppe appeared to be breaking out in 2024, hitting .244 with 20 home runs and 56 RBIs across 136 games. However, he struggled to build on that performance in 2025 and has endured another difficult season in 2026.

The right-handed hitter was batting just above .200 with four home runs and 23 RBIs at the time of the trade. He also missed time after suffering a fractured left wrist in April. Those numbers are underwhelming, but O’Hoppe still offers legitimate power at a premium defensive position. A change of scenery could be exactly what he needs to rediscover the offensive production he displayed earlier in his career.

O’Hoppe also brings more than short-term value. He remains under club control beyond the 2026 season, giving Texas an opportunity to evaluate him as a potential long-term answer behind the plate. That makes the move more than a typical deadline rental.

Chase Silseth gives Rangers another bullpen weapon

Silseth should provide more immediate help for a Rangers team looking to protect narrow leads down the stretch. The 26-year-old has made 47 relief appearances for the Angels this season, posting a 3-2 record with a 2.72 ERA. He recorded 48 strikeouts across 39 2/3 innings, showing the ability to miss bats in high-pressure situations.

Silseth originally reached the majors as a starting pitcher and made 17 starts during his first four seasons. His transition to the bullpen has allowed his power arsenal to play up, turning him into a much more consistent weapon. Texas can now use him in the middle or later innings, while his starting experience gives manager Skip Schumaker additional flexibility if the rotation encounters injuries.

The Rangers have won six of their past 10 games and appear to be gaining momentum at the right time. Adding O’Hoppe and Silseth shows that the front office believes the current roster is capable of making a serious postseason run. The Angels’ return will ultimately determine how the deal is judged from their perspective. Trading two players inside the division is always risky, especially when both could remain under Rangers control for multiple seasons.

For now, Texas has made its intentions unmistakable. The Rangers are leading the AL West, and they are adding reinforcements to try to stay there.
