Jets' Geno Smith eager to move forward after addressing offseason issue

Geno Smith wants the conversation surrounding him to shift back to football. Speaking to reporters for the first time since an offseason off-field matter became public, the New York Jets quarterback acknowledged the situation while making it clear his attention is on the season ahead.

His goal is to avoid having his mistakes thwart the positive steps he and his teammates have taken.

"Coming out of OTAs, I feel like we built some positive momentum," Smith said. "I'm really happy with where this team is right now. I really hate the fact that something I was a part of could've been a distraction for this team, my teammates (and) this organization because a lot of hard work has been put in."

Earlier this month, USA TODAY, citing a report from the Davie (Fla.) Police Department, reported that the investigation involving Smith is no longer active. With that behind him, the veteran quarterback can return his full attention to leading the Jets into 2026.

The coming weeks will be critical as Smith continues learning offensive coordinator Frank Reich's system while building chemistry with a young group of playmakers around him. After helping stabilize the franchise last season, he'll once again be counted on to lead an offense with high expectations.

Smith's message was a simple one, and it was needed. He regrets becoming a distraction, but he's ready to move forward. As training camp begins, the Jets appear just as eager to leave the offseason behind and focus on preparing for Week 1. Everyone should be pleased with that update.

Jets Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the 2026 NFL season.
