Casey Mize trade grades: Who won the Padres and Tigers deal?

Monday's MLB trade deadline came and went. And for a few minutes, it seemed as if Casey Mize was going to be staying in Detroit. But right at the buzzer, the prized right-handed pitcher would be on the move.
With basically no time to spare, the Padres and Tigers were able to agree on a trade that sent Mize to San Diego. Despite a weak farm system to work with (ranked last by MLB.com), the Padres were able to bolster their rotation with both Mize and Robbie Ray at the deadline.

The Tigers, on the other hand, have been sellers. They dealt superstar ace Tarik Skubal to the Dodgers and now bid farewell to Mize.
So who won this deal? Let's break it down with the details for each side and hand out some grades.
Padres and Tigers trade details
Padres get: RHP Casey Mize and 3B Gage Workman
Tigers get: LHP Kash Mayfield and LHP Jackson Wolf
Padres trade grades
The Padres didn't have much prospect capital to work with, but general manager A.J. Preller was still able to make moves to decidedly improve the rotation. Mize will immediately be an impact starter for the Padres as they hope to secure a wild-card spot in the National League. And while Preller did part with No. 2 prospect Kash Mayfield, it's purely win-now mode in San Diego. Mize will be a free agent after this season. Grade: B+
Tigers trade grades
After dealing Skubal, Mize's days in Detroit were obviously numbered. So, the Tigers have to be happy to at least get a top-2 prospect in the Padres' organization for what could end up being a rental in San Diego. Mayfield still has a couple years to go of minor-league seasoning, but has shown impressive strikeout numbers in High-A ball. Jackson Wolf seems to be a throw-in player who has struggled mightily in three Triple-A seasons. But it's difficult to reward selling even if the Tigers got something in return. Grade: C-
