The New York Yankees appeared to be well on their way to a blowout loss against the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday, going down 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. But before losing the plot again on the mound, the Yankees made it a ballgame. They rallied from six runs down and even took the lead in the bottom of the seventh — with recent trade acquisition Luis Garcia Jr. already leaving an imprint for his new ballclub.

Garcia hit a single in the bottom of the fourth to open his account for the Yankees, and then he followed that up with a monster two-run home run off of Cardinals pitcher George Soriano. He uncorked a 2-2 changeup right around the knees and turned on it, sending it over the right-field bleachers for his first home run as a Yankee.

While the Yankees did end up losing 13-7 after allowing the Cardinals to score seven runs in the eighth inning, Garcia’s first game in pinstripes is going to live forever in his memory.

“The experience was great,” Garcia said through the Yankees’ translator, via YES Network on X. “It means a lot. To be able to do that, hit a home run in Yankee Stadium and to be able to get the ball back. It’s a great moment, there. Great memory. I’ll keep that in my heart. Just going there, try to do my job. Try to find a page where I can put my team on top. Just the whole moment, I’m gonna cherish it.”

The only thing spoiling Garcia’ debut was that the Yankees weren’t able to bring home the win.

“We had a chance to win the game. Unfortunately, that’s how baseball goes sometimes. You feel that you have the game in your hands but sometimes it doesn’t work like that,” Garcia added.
