Packers roster moves: Double tight end swap

The Green Bay Packers made a double swap at tight end on Tuesday, waiving injured tight ends Luke Lachey and RJ Maryland and signing tight ends McCallan Castles and Drew Biber.

Lachey and Maryland were both injured to start this week, stressing the already injury-hampered depth at tight end to start training camp. The team's response was waiving both players with injury designations and signing Castles, who was previously in Green Bay, and Biber, an undrafted rookie out of Minnesota.
Lachey has a foot/ankle injury, while Maryland has a hamstring injury. It's possible neither will return. This is a story of life on the roster fringes at training camp; becoming unavailable to practice is the quickest way out of town.
Castles and Biber were both available to practice with the Packers on Tuesday. They joined Josh Whyle, Drake Dabney and Messiah Swinson as the healthy and available tight ends.
Castles joined the Packers practice squad in November of last year and remained with the team through April. Biber was among a nine-player group who worked out for the Packers on July 27.
Over a five-year collegiate career, Biber caught 33 passes over 50 games. He will wear No. 46. Castles is wearing No. 47.
Depth was needed at tight end: Tucker Kraft is off the PUP list but slowly returning to practice work, while Luke Musgrave is on the PUP list with a neck injury of undetermined severity.
